HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT HOMEWORK?

Some of my readers have known me for as long as I have been on this earth, maybe even changed my diapers.

But some of you are my newest friends.

The beauty of the blog is that we have found interesting things out about each other in a modern, techno kind of way.

Did you know I am a songwriter? I have several recordings as well, but that's another subject.

My goal this week is to bring the lyricist out in you and ask you to pen a song about your feelings for, of all things, homework. For help with rhyming words, check out www.rhymezone.com. If you need inspiration, sit outside one night this week under the harvest moon. Get out your guitar or harmonica for musical support and opine away. Who knows, the neighborhood hound dogs may even join in!

Here goes . . .

(Folksy, country flavor)

Ode to the Essay
by Chrissy Larson

Verse 1:
It was thirty two years ago I did my time,
In a High School that's so far away;
There was Algebra, Spanish and Chemistry too;
English Comp and the five part ess-ay.

Verse 2:
Now I needed my credits to walk on that stage,
Hear my name, throw my cap to the sky;
But with essays to write and exams yet to pass,
I couldn't just turn a blind eye.

verse 3:
Through many long weekends and more sleepless nights,
Than I really do care to admit;
I finally tackled what I had feared most,
My efforts paid off, every bit.

Verse 4:
I had intros, conclusions, three mains and a thesis,
The only thing left was my clincher;
Oh no . . . not a brain freeze! I'm 'bout out of time -
I'm ready to end this adventure!

Verse 5:
I finally finished those essays and more,
I "walked" and I did not look back;
But who would have guessed that I needed those skills,
To coach you and keep you on track.

Chorus:
I'm so glad it's your essay, not mine;
Watching movies is really just fine.
To Staples again,
I need a red pen;
I'm so glad it's your essay, not mine
(twice through because it's just that good)

P.s. I will accept nothing less than a poem!

to the tune of "This is the Song That Never Ends" (Lambchop)

I've got homework that never ends.
Yes it goes on and on my friends.
Some teachers started giving it Not knowing when to stop,
And they'll continue giving it
'Til I blow my top 'cause
It's the homework that never ends...

I am so glad you set the standard for this one, Daniel. Your song would have made Sherry Lewis proud. You have an amazing hidden talent. Sorry you feel this way :(

Wow, this is going to be kind of hard because, the music I listen to does not have lyrics. Or if it does, it's like "Blast the Speakers" or "Boom the Bass". But here we go....

Set to the song "Gaston" from Beauty and the Beast.

Noooo ooonnneee likes any homework.
They just think its pain.
They just see it as another thing they should shirk!

For no matter how small or simple it seems, homework just means extra time.

You can ask any Freshmen, Junior, or Senior, and they tell they tell how homework is the most excruciating pain they have ever received.

H-O-M-E-W-O-R-K!!!

home work is boring I hate it very much. I have to do it or I'll end up at the back of a garbage truck.

Thats as good as i can do.

Cyberpsalmist said...

Kyle, you're gonna have to sing this one for me to get the FULL effect. (Looking forward to that on Friday. I'm not quite feelin' it.)
Great lyrics. This impromptu writing will keep you on your toes!

Cyberpsalmist said...

Nathan,
I hear you're a poet,
so why don't you show it?

Cyberpsalmist said...

Ok, Josh, I know you can do better than "a garbage truck" for a clincher. Please try again :/

So, did anyone like my song?

To the tune of "Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog"

High school homework was a bore, man.
Not a good friend of mine.
But I wrote and I read and I studied when I could,
So my grades always looked pretty fine.

(Chorus)
Singing joy to the world,
All the boys and girls.
Joy to all the students learning A to Z,
Joy to you and me.

College homework was a chore, man.
An even worse friend of mine.
But I made the 'brary home, and I studied with the moon.
I got to walk in that commencement line.

(Chorus)

Yes, Mrs. Larson, I loved your ditty, especially the chorus. I'm sure it will even sound better when you sing it for us this Friday (along with the other ones that have tunes with which you are familiar!). Do I hear an "Amen," class?!

Wow, Mrs Brooks! We are always finding out new things about each other.

You are a poet
and I didn't know it!

I guess we listened to the same music too. Great song lyrics. I'm glad you had fun with this and wish the others would do the same.

i'm gonna have fun with it this time. "Homework", the extended version....

homework is boring
homework is lame.
i'd rather be in bed snoring
than awake and in pain.

i arise in the 8 o'clock hour
with my hair messy and parted,
and stumble on my way to the shower,
then off to get homework started.

i sit at a table for what seems like days,
creating smoke from my pen like a purple haze.
my mind grows tired and begins evade,
but my dad just reminds me of the progress i've made.

after undefined hours of work
i finally get around to a finish for the day.
i get on the computer with a silly smirk,
now knowing that on Friday, i'll be okay.

This is to my own tune:

Homework, Homework,
It make me go berserk

Homework, Homework,
It only has one perk

When you are done!!!!

Ooh Now this is a hard one..
Here goes nothin.

Homework, is another word for cruelty
Its taking the time from us away,
Seconds, Minutes, Hours, a day
Why, Oh, Why did life choose it to be this way?

Work, day and night,
It just doesn't seem right!
Spending all day at school,
then coming home and doing more!
This situation is such a bore...

Us scholars need more time for freedom,
to do many other things with our time.
But the real question is "If we didn't have homework later on would we ever earn a dime?"

These questions fly through our head,
but we really should be thinking of the homework we dread.
As hard and boring as it seems,
it really benefits us if ya know what I mean. ;)

Kinda corny but as long as it counts it'll do!

your song is great cyber ;) give it that country twang!

I picked haiku, as it's short! is that OK? haiku doesn't have to rhyme

staying up all night,
studying in the closest--
A's were not easy

Oh, wait, I thought of something: to the tune of "on top of spaghetti"!

Instead of my homework,
I'm watching TV,
And eating some popcorn,
Then getting some z

Next day on the pop quiz,
I'm scratching my head
And wishing my homework
Had been done instead!

(love your blog! how on earth do you think of all these questions? oh, yeah, not coming from earth!)

Anonymous said...

hmmm.... ok I'll try a little harder.
a little harder means everything when it comes to homework. homework is hard, homework is rough. homework is boring yet still it never seems to go away, it always stays. my teachers say I can do better. I think to myself how but when I get an A I usually end up saying wow and yay!!!

I hope this is a little better ms chrissy.

I cant really sing or rime that well. =[

I get shy also. dont want to make myself look bad.

To the tune of "I'm a Believer" by the Monkees

I thought that homework was really good for me.
That's what they said in elementary.
Ah, teachers were out to deceive me.
Yeah, I was so naive!
My mother's words haunted all my dreams.

(Chorus)
Then I saw the load!
And now I say "NO MORE!"
Not a trace of doubt in my mind!
I'm not fine
I say NO MORE! It's a bore! Oh oh oh!

I thought homework was more or less pretty easy.
Believed the more I did, the less I got.
What was the use in arguin'?
Might as well get done.
When I went to high school, I thought "Fun!"

(Chorus)

I LOVE THIS ONE!!!

Ok, i actually have two songs...
The first one goes to the tune of "Amazing Grace"

Here goes...

Unamazing homework, how i hate that sound,
That makes me write and write.

I used to color, but now I write,
It makes me want to fight.

Theres outlines, topics, and grammar, too.
I write, and proof, and rewrite.

You edit long, and fix my err's
And hope I get it right.

Then I have a song that I wrote with my handy dandy guitar...

and it goes a little something like this...

When I get up on Saturday mornin'
The day after co-op
I know what work I gotta do
But it's not at the top,

of my LIST!

So I get up on Saturday mornin'
Thinking back to yesterday
Trying to remember what she said
Why doe sit matter anyway?

Is it all USEFUL!?

Well I've been up all Saturday mornin'
I think I'd better move on
I should start on my work
Instead of writing this song

But NO! Gotta write this song!

I've been up all day Saturday
I haven't goot any work done
Have I started my essays?
No, cuz they're not any fun!

NOT ANY FUN!

haha...that's it

and no one ask me to sing it, cuz I will not.

You madam, are a cruel one. This is going to be terrible, I assure you. Set to the tune(kind of) of This Is Halloween. Yes I was watching The Nightmare Before Christmas. >_>

Boys and girls of every grade
Your nerves are about to become frayed

Against the law for you to flee
This, our school of higher learning.

This is homework, this is homework
teenagers scream in the dead of night.

This is Homework, everybody make the grade
read and study till you get it right.
Be wary of trick questions, double edged blades.
In this school of higher learning.

I am the pop quiz waiting for you in class
All essay questions, mind shattered like glass

I am the project that was due last week
Only half finished, I make life seem bleak

This is Homework, this is Homework,
Homework! Homework! Homework! Homework!

It was either this, or 'You will bring Honor to Us All' from Mulan.

Demetri, this was short and sweet. I especially likes the last line.

Alyssa, this is great! Seems to me that you have a handle on the benefits of homework, even though you prefer your freedom.

EVERYONE!!! Please be introduced to my dear songwriting friend, Karen. She is amazing. Thanks you so much for your gracious and funny contribution! I love ya!!!

Cyberpsalmist said...

Josh, I must give you extra credit for this one. Thank you so much for going back to the drawing board. Your ending is way more positive than the garbage heap I pictured you on.

Tina, I'm back in the 60's again- Thank you for your rendition. Very creative and singable. Good Job!!!

Cyberpsalmist said...

Shay,
Wait . . . did you say essays were not any fun? Could have fooled me. Both songs were fabulous. I bet this was an easy assignment for you. Good Job!!!

Cyberpsalmist said...

Matt, I'm thinkin' this is maybe a bit on the edge of indy . . . I don't know, I'd have to hear it to be sure. Anyway, you'll need to explain the "blouse" part to me. Would make an interesting music video.

Cyberpsalmist said...

Alaina,

So dark and dreary, but then again, I remember feeling the same way. Funny how the years change your opinion about even the most dreadful things from the past, including homework. Watch, you'll be a teacher one day and be giving out assignments like this!

Cyberpsalmist said...

Hunter, Seems I remember this exact song from AC/DC. (Don't ask me how I know.)
