The Song in My Head

by Christina Horton

Imagine a world without music, one where not even the birds could sing. Only SILENCE and the dull sounds of everyday life would exist. Horrible, right?

Thankfully, we do have music, and some are even gifted in making it. Definitely, it plays a major part in human expression and inspiration, influencing artists, writers, and more. Because of this, I believe that you can tell a lot about a person just from what music they like.

When I was little, I listened along with my dad to the oldies of the ‘60s and ‘70s and to gentle pop songs with my mom. Also, I learned a great amount of hymns and classical music since I started playing piano and at that time attended a church that mostly sung out of the Baptist hymnal. Eventually, Christian contemporary/rock reached my ears as well as those of my family; alone (but with guidelines), I explored Christian scream-o, hip-hop, and rap. As I grew as a musician and as a typical human being, I began to find out more about myself and more about the kinds of music, including mainstream, that just expressed…me. Picking out my favorite sounds and words, I found the music to the song in my head, composed most importantly of praise to my Savior—the One who gave me the music—and also of pure enjoyment. It has the passion of Beethoven; the strong foundations of “Be Thou My Vision” and “What Wondrous Love is This”; the excitement of Bill Haley, the Beatles, and the Monkees; the spice of ragtime and jazz; the heartbeat of Jeremy Camp, Barlow Girl, and Chris Tomlin; the rock of Relient K, The Afters, Fireflight, Anberlin, and Sherwood; the originality of Sufjan Stevens and Unwed Sailor; and the creativity of my own compositions. There’s probably more…but you would be here all day if I mentioned every detail!

So, what kind of music expresses who you are?

What is the song in your head?

The song "Im Too Sexy" defines who I am.

The song in my head is The Grateful Dead live in Egypt 1978 playing "Iko Iko" its in my head because i have 2 devices on my ears wich have the song coming out of them and it feels like the song is in my head.

First of all I've never really understood the phrase "express yourself" or those like it in an artistic context. For instance, all of these modern "artists" who splatter paint all over a canvas say they are expressing themselves by doing such, yet no one can understand what they are trying to say. So, if I don't answer your question I'm sorry.

But, I can tell you the genres and artists I like or hate. I like most '80s music except for Phil Collins who is horrible. My two favorite bands have to be Journey and Guns 'n' Roses. I hate a lot more styles than I like unfortunatly. I dispise pop music; hip-hop is terrible; techno is cheap; rap is... well you know; and country is the devil (except for Johny Cash).

The song "I can only Imagine" defines me.

Hunter,

For the song that defines you...ok...I'm gonna leave it at that...

As for the song in your head, sounds interesting ;). And I don't know about you but two devices such as those are always playing a song in my head!

Well you answered my question so I guess you sort of understood what I meant :). Yeah, I know what you mean about artists like that who even call painted toilets "art"...

Sorry, I meant to put "Daniel," at the top of the last comment...

Demetri,

Ah...Mercy Me? You should check out some of their hymns CDs. They are pretty sweet!! :)

I like some of Taylor Swifts music. I don't think I have a song that expresses me. I have never pay that close of atention to the music I listen to. I like the songs we sing in church. I really enjoy listening to the song called "Wish You Were Here".

Lol, I have a blog just like this on my site.

The song that dfines me is "Re-Education Through Labor" by Rise Against. Although I have been known to sing a mean "In the Jungle." (Some of you know what I mean.)

The song that plays in my head, are two songs in fact. The kind of take turns...

"Human Nature" by Megara vs. DJ Lee. And "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" by Beastie Boys. (Not that I recomend anyone listening to it. I play it on Guitar Hero and it's just a sweet tune, so it is hard to get it out of my head.)

The song in my head is either, "The Sharpest Lives" By MCR, Amy Lee's rendition of "Sally's Song", or "I Don't Care" By Apocalyptica and Adam Gontier. As for the song that describes me, eh... maybe Let the Flames Begin by Paramore? *shrug*(It's been playing over and over and over again. xD)

Hey Tina!

Well if the question is asking what kind of music expresses me it would have to be hard rock. Its crazy, unpredictable, and out of control (at times) like me! But if the question is which song expresses me then it would have to be "Love Addict" by Family force 5. hahaha It sounds kind of weird me saying that expresses me but in a way it does!

The song in my head? Wow that is impossible for me to answer since I pretty much listen to music every minute in awake. But at the moment the song "Give me Your eyes" by Brandon Heath is stuck in my head!

By the way...
Nice writing Tina!

Amy,

Cool :) Definitely try to listen more closely to the music you enjoy, whether to the music itself or the words...it really is amazing what you will find!

Kyle,

Haha I just read your blog. Nice! I like it! :D It could have been me writing those words lol.
From seeing what you wrote on both your blog and mine, I can tell that you are definitely into music.

The music that expresses who I am is gotta be the song Bohemian Rhapsody...The song is pure A.D.D. It's fun, scary, interesting, and very unique.

The song stuck in my head is Love Story by Taylor Swift, but only because that seems to be the only song playing on the radio any more...

when i read your blog title, the first thing that popped into my head was The Song in my Head by Sherwood. that band is incredible, and it was the song which actually played in my head when i began reading your article. i was pretty excited to read that you listen to them, because not many people know who they are.

but, the music that i think best defines me is the music of the independent industry:indie rock. nearly anything in the indie genre catches my attention, but preferably indie rock/pop or folk. i love the harmonies of a good indie folk musician, usually the best being female singers. i love anything with a creative assortment of instruments, slightly abstract or poetic lyrics, and enough talent to make the songs just catchy enough to where i listen to it everywhere i go.

but i think just below indie music, i would have to say 80s/70s comes at a hard second. just as daniel, journey is one of my favorite bands, along side talking heads, r.e.m., billy joel and the cure.

well, that's the music that dances back and forth my head.

thanks for posting such a great article =]

Alaina,

Sounds interesting! Yeah I've heard of Paramore...Are they good? What type of music genre are they?

Alyssa,

Lol I can definitely see how hard rock fits you after having known you for so long! :)

And yeah, that Brandon Heath song gets stuck in my head too! They play it a lot on the radio...

Shay,

Lol...ah, the Bohemian Rhapsody huh? Cool :D

Yeah, I've heard a lot from Taylor Swift lately.

Nathan,

That's exactly where I got my title from! I was hoping someone would recognize it :D YES!! SHERWOOD IS AWESOME!!! Hands down...no doubt about it! It is so sad that not many people know about them.

Ah, indie!! Yes, I love indie rock/pop/folk! It's actually kind of new to me so I have definitely been doing some hard exploring in that area. Any recommendations? And have you ever heard of Sufjan Stevens? He's either baroque pop or indie folk or a combination of those two.

OOOO! No music? Sounds like a nightmare!

When I was little, my house had an intercom system in it that carried music throughout every room, no matter where you were. Somehow, I think that is what heaven will be like but on a much grander scale. From every corner, we'll hear the sound of 24 elders as they bow and sing, "Holy, Holy, Holy..." with chords of harmony our ears have never heard. Cherubims and Seraphims will pipe in as we, the redeemed sing our song. I can't wait!

The songs that fill my head now are songs like Revelation Song, I Can't Wait, Holy, and others like those, which I consider practice for the events about to unfold. There is, in fact, a new song about to be sung. The melody will come from Deep calling unto deep; it's words will be birthed through revelation found only in the secret place. The genre will encompass everything from peaceful and soothing to the extremes of a fierce battle cry.

These are the songs filling my head.

i don't think i've heard of him, actually, but baroque pop is quite amazing. one band that plays music in that genre is The Arcade Fire. they do a lot of art rock too.

but some great indie folk bands are beirut (they play more french/italian subculture folk), fleet foxes, the innocence mission, the weepies, bon ivers, andrew bird, and gregory and the hawk.

those bands and artists are fantastic. check a few of them out.

Mrs. Chrissy,

YES!! The new songs and music of heaven I'm sure will be WONDERFUL! I can't wait along with you! :D Nothing in this world, no matter how good and enjoyable it sounds now, will compare to what we will hear from the One who gave us music in the first place! Sometimes we get so caught up in the music we hear now...definitely, I need to also keep on thinking about heavenly music and other things of above :D

Thanks for writing a great, encouraging comment!! :D

PS. An intercom all through your house??? I might take up the idea! Now if only I could convince my mom and dad...

Nathan,

Thank you so much!!! I will definitely check those out :)

My favorite type of music is contemporary christian. And even though I listen to it on a daily basis, I have yet to find a song that describes my personality. There are definantly songs I can relate to but never any that fit exactly who I am.

The song in my head is a simple, less-than-2-minute children's "Hide 'em in Your Heart" Steve Green Scripture song based on I John 3:16 (not John 3:16). My daughter is learning it in first-grade choir, as did Daniel and Nathan when they were in first grade. The song is the gospel in a nutshell: "This is how we know what love is. Jesus Christ lay down His life for us." Now that is music to my ears.

Christy,

I love contemporary Christian too! If I'm not listening to something at the computer, I'm listening to Air 1 Radio. :)
And do keep listening! I'm sure you will find your song one day ;)

Mrs. Brooks,

Children's Bible songs can definitely get stuck in your head...However, it truly amazing how when you are older that they easily come to mind and even remind you about some of the simplest but greatest truths! They are profound messages contained in some simple words :D

I have a ton of different songs in my head so its really hard to pick the one that defines me best.

Hey Tina, I'm not sure what genre Paramore is, but yes, they're an awesome band. :] You should definitely check them out.
